Early Life and Character
Khadijah (RA) was born into a respected and wealthy family of the Quraysh tribe in Makkah. Her father, Khuwaylid ibn Asad, was a successful merchant, and Khadijah inherited his intelligence, honesty, and business skills.
Even before Islam, people in Makkah called her “Al-Tahira” — the Pure One — because of her noble character, modesty, and generosity. She was deeply respected by everyone for her dignity and kindness.
After her father passed away, Khadijah (RA) managed her own business — a rare achievement for a woman at that time. She hired trustworthy men to trade her goods across Arabia, and her business flourished under her wise leadership.
Her Marriage to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
When Khadijah (RA) heard about the honesty and good manners of a young man named Muhammad ibn Abdullah ﷺ, she hired him to handle her trade in Syria. Upon his return, her servant told her how trustworthy, gentle, and fair he had been during the trip. Impressed by his character, Khadijah (RA) felt a deep respect and admiration for him.
She proposed marriage to him, and he accepted. At that time, the Prophet ﷺ was 25 years old, and Khadijah (RA) was around 40. Despite their age difference, their marriage was filled with love, peace, and mutual respect.
Their home became one of tranquility and faith. Allah says in the Qur’an:
“And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy.”
(Surah Ar-Rum 30:21)
This verse beautifully reflects the love and harmony that existed between Khadijah (RA) and the Prophet ﷺ.
The First Believer in Islam
When the Prophet ﷺ received the first revelation from Allah through Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) in the cave of Hira, he was frightened and trembling. He rushed home to Khadijah (RA) saying, “Cover me! Cover me!”
Khadijah (RA) comforted him and said with deep faith:
“By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your family, help the poor, serve your guests generously, and support those in need.”
Then, she took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal, who confirmed that he truly had been chosen as a Prophet. Khadijah (RA) immediately believed in his message — she became the first Muslim.
Her unwavering support gave the Prophet ﷺ strength in his earliest and hardest days. While others doubted him, Khadijah (RA) stood beside him with full trust in Allah.
Her Sacrifices for Islam
Khadijah (RA) spent her wealth and comfort to support the Prophet ﷺ and his mission. When the Quraysh boycotted the Muslims, she endured years of hardship and hunger with patience and faith.
She never complained or turned back. Her heart was full of peace because she knew that serving the message of Islam was worth every sacrifice. Her generosity and devotion became a foundation for the growing Muslim community.
Her Death and the Prophet’s Grief
Khadijah (RA) passed away in the tenth year of Prophethood, during a time of great sorrow for the Prophet ﷺ. Her death deeply affected him. He called that year “The Year of Grief.”
Even years later, he continued to remember her with love and respect. Whenever he heard her name, his eyes would fill with tears. He would send food to her friends and often say,
“She believed in me when no one else did. She accepted Islam when people rejected me. She helped and comforted me when there was no one to lend me a hand.”
This deep love shows how much Khadijah (RA) meant to the Prophet ﷺ.
Her Status in Islam
Allah honored Khadijah (RA) in a special way. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Jibreel came to me and said: ‘Give Khadijah the good news of a house in Paradise made of pearls, where there will be no noise or fatigue.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This hadith shows how much Allah loved her for her patience, faith, and sacrifices. She will forever be remembered as a model of purity, devotion, and strength for all believers.
